Recommended extras

On this page I will recommend several items that will help you grow your business, make better wigs/toppers and generally make life easier and more enjoyable.

Some of the links will earn me a small commission if you purchase the item, some of them will not.

Please rest assured, I have personally used these items and would only recommend something I myself have found useful and value for money.

1. First up, wig stands. Not all wig stands are created equal, and a decent stand will make life a whole lot easier for you while you work.

https://amzn.to/3ZbL5rO - tripod floor wig stand

2. You can also use a table clamp if you're short on space, these are definitely not all created equal, be sure to purchase a sturdy one (like this listed below) because a weak clamp will start to roll around immediately and is incredibly frustrating!

https://amzn.to/3XCmlrD - table clamp

3. You're going to need a wig block (cork head) to work on, I have several pieces in different sizes as well as one I use solely for colouring.

If you can only afford one for now, got for a Medium size.

4. Next up, a sewing machine! A great beginner machine is the Singer Tradition 2273

https://amzn.to/3zeCr15 - Singer Tradition 2273

A basic but functional machine, easy to use, and up to the task of sewing through weft and fabric. Comes with cleaning brush and accessories to help keep your machine in tip top condition.

If your budget is a little tighter at the moment, the Brother LS14S is also a great beginner choice.

When it comes to photographing your work, you may wish to invest in backdrops, ring lights and mannequins. We have some of these available on site, but to keep shipping costs low we will list some choices here.

5. First things first, a decent bust mannequin. Setting the right tone is critical when selling your products and an attractive mannequin in a realistic size is the best way to start. Below is a light skin option and a dark skin option

If you would like a mannequin with a longer neck and moveable head:

6. Next up, lighting. There are a few options depending on your particular set up. Starting with what I call the "big light". This comes with a stand and a diffuser so you can soften the light as needed. The light can be angled as you prefer. This is a big bright light!

https://amzn.to/3XgPG9p - big light

Next there's the smaller ring light option, for closer up.

This little baby ring ight is 10" size and comes with phone camera stand

Or the other end of the spectrum, this 14 inch ring ight has amazing reviews!

7. Photography backdrops and stands make your photos much more professional and appealing. Below are a few links to items I have used personally in my business, starting with the basic back drop kit. You do not need to spend a fortune on the stands, it's the backdrops that hold the power here!

This first backdrop you may think an odd choice, but it's important to remember the effect colour has on your wigs. Using a pink backdrop for example can skew the photography results. A neutral tone is best. You can experiment with colour of course (I do!) but be aware you may need to do more editing after the photos are taken to ensure your customer gets the best representation of what they're purchasing and to minimise the risk of returns and refunds.

https://amzn.to/3zmIBw2 - baby pink mottled backdrop

https://amzn.to/4gkdceG - Gold light glimmer backdrop

And why not have a little seasonal fun with it!

8. One last thing you will need is scissors. Several pairs of scissors!

Firstly, Haberdashery/Fabric scissors.

My personal choice below:

https://amzn.to/3XyT6FT - fabric scissors

A more budget friendly option:

https://amzn.to/3TmVjlh - fabric scissors 2

These are great for many different needs when wigmaking, including cutting fabric, splitting weft, trimming lace etc.

9. You will also likely need hairdressing scissors/ thinning scissors and razors.

https://amzn.to/47qh0qE - beginner set- great value

https://amzn.to/3MzdUqJ - beginner scissor only

Please bear in mind you need to prove to be 18+ to order these scissors. If you're under this age an adult will need to order them for you and Amazon regularly check ID when delivering them.

10. Straightners, hairdryers, styling tools!

The GHD original professional styler is an absolute classic and the medium sized plates will be sufficient for most hairstyles/wigs. There is an option for the wider plate (that I personally use as I have very thick hair) but if you're just starting out the classic styler is a great choice. These glide so smoothly through the hair and heat up in 30 seconds, giving you more time to work.

Another gadget I use a lot is the curling wand. Below is a great budget option that comes with glove to protect your hand and also handy safety buffer on the tip of the wand (Beware of any wands that do not have this detail as burn risk is much higher)

https://amzn.to/47hShEI - budget curling wand with safety guards

Finally, hairdryers. Although it is best to allow wigs and toppers to air dry naturally, it is occasionally necessary to blow dry.

This hairdryer comes with a salon length cord (2.4m) and a nozzle for directional air flow control. It is also lightweight at just over half a kilo and has 3 heat settings! Bargain price with great reviews
